Kinds of Cars in the Indian automotive market- Part 1

There are many kinds of cars available in the Indian automotive market. Some of us may just clarify them as Sedans, Hatchbacks and SUV's...... But there's more to cars than these. With this article I aim to  broaden your mind about the types of vehicles available in the market so that, planning your budgets and directing yourself to the right car should get easier.


Today's article is all about hatchbacks..


1.Entry level hatchbacks: For those on a hatchback with a tight budget

Range from around 3 lakhs to around 5/5 ½ lakhs

Cars available in this segment are:


         1.Maruti Suzuki Alto (3.60-4.81 lakh)


         2.Datsun Redi-go (3.32 - 4.412 lakh)


3. Maruti suzuki alto K10 (4.26 - 5.08 lakh)

In this segment, I prefer the alto k10 as it has a much better engine in terms of power delivery. It's also backed up by the amazing after sales service that maruti offers



2. Premium budget hatchbacks

Range from around 3 to 6 lakhs

Cars in this segment are:


  1. Renault Kwid (3.36 - 5.74 lakh)






  1. Suzuki S-Presso (4.34 - 5.74 lakh)


  1. Suzuki Celerio (4.99 - 6.35 lakh)

Here, I could bet on the Renault Kwid as it has the best features and looks. But if rear seat comfort is your priority, go for the S-Presso




3. Mid range hatchbacks

Range from around 4 to 7 lakhs

Cars in the segment are:


  1. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R (5.24 to 7.03 lakh)

  1. Tata Tiago (5.32 - 7.28 lakh)









  1. Hyundai Santro (4.92-6.45 lakh)


  1. Datsun Go (3.73 - 6.99 lakh)

The car to buy from this list, in terms of space, features, looks and safety would be the Tiago. Also worth noting here is that you get an 85HP petrol engine which is strong and fuel efficient.




4. Premium mid-range hatchbacks

Range from around 6 to 11 lakhs

Cars in this segment are:


1. Maruti Suzuki Swift ( 6.07-10.58 lakh)



2. Hyundai grand i10 (5.58-9.20 lakh)




3. Mahindra KUV 100 NXT (5.56 to 9.44 lakh)t





4. Maruti Suzuki ignis (5.56-8.33 lakh)



5. Hyundai grand i10 nios (5.89-9.50 lakh)

6. Renault Triber (5.79-7.57 lakh)


Here it's the Grand i10 NIOS to go for as it looks great and has features along with a good  value for money proposition. Consider the Triber also as it has space for 6 people



  1. Premium hatchbacks

Range from 6 to 11 and a half lacs

Cars in the segment are:


1. Maruti Suzuki baleno (6.68-10.53 lakh)

2. Hyundai i20 (6.51-10

63 lakh)


3. Honda jazz(8.66-11.07 lakh)

4. Tata altroz(6.25 to 11.05 lakh)


5. Toyota glanza (8.26-10.52 lakh)

 The best car here overall is the Altroz, it's spacious and the safest of the lot along with the best looks and features.

Go for the Glanza if automatic transmission is your priority. It may be the same car as the Baleno, but with Toyota's great service network and more warranty years than the standard Baleno, its the one to go for. 

Also, note  that Tata Altroz may be coming out later this year with a dual-clutch transmission. So it should be worth the wait.

LOVE AT FIRST ZEN - My first ever car

Hey there! Welcome to my first post. 1. Love at first Zen! There may be many vintage cars that people talk about. Ask me, being born in 2002 I don't know much. Because all that I'd seen when I was born in the early 2000's were Altos, 800's, Accent's etc That brings us to my first ever car. The Suzuki Zen.  The moment I saw it, it was love at first sight! (cant say drive because I'm still 17!) It looked stunning in violet and had lots going for it. A 1998 LX model. It's 'jelly bean' design looked so extraordinary for a hatchback. My neighbours who owned the car before me, modified the car to look like the VX spec by adding a bull bar, power windows and a set of fog lamps which was very cool that time If anybody ever knew this, Zen actually stands for Zero-engine-noise  It had a 900cc engine powered by 60 (yes 60!)
