Hyundai recently launched the new Venue SUV with an IMT or intelligent manual transmission but have you really wondered how many kinds of transmissions are out there? , which is the best one among them, which is the most fuel efficient or which makes the best driving experience in a car?

We all know that car transmissions come of many types namely manual and automatic but there are variations in each of them. Here's a full list of them!


Manual transmissions:
The old classic. Gives you one of the best driving experiences thought the changing of gears and clutch work is done manually.




Intelligent manual transmission: (IMT)
Developed by hyundai and kia motors, this is a hybrid of an automatic and a manual transmission where in change of gears is done manually while the clutch work is done automatically. In the below picture you can see a manual transmission but the clutch is absent. Hyundai says that the technology uses an  'intention sensor' with the gear lever that informs a transmission control unit TCU when the driver is about to change gears the TCU  then signals the hydraulic actuator to engage and disengage the clutch plate while the driver shifts gears. No compromises on fuel efficiency and performance















Automated Manual Transmission:(AMT)

automated manual transmissions or developer car companies to avoid extra cost incurred due to converting the cars by using torque converter automatics. Jio gear changes and clutch work is automatic. However, you do get a manual mode to change gears manually. It is a software used to govern how and when  the shifts will change. But the problem your is that you could lose track of the gears while manually shifting via the plus minus lever of the paddles especially if the gear changing software second guesses is you and shifts automatically. The driving experience isnt smooth either.

  1. Dual Clutch automatics:(DCT)
The dual clutch system for automatics is the best system and most efficient working kind of automatic.(two independent manual transmissions controlled by computer)  These are the ones used in high end luxury cars and many sports cars. Here the transmission of the cars have two clutches.One clutch for the odd gears and the other for even gears. There is also a manual mode so you can shift gears manually via lever. Also this kind of transmission is fuel efficient as well.






















  1. Continuous variable transmission:(CVT)
The CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) provides smooth and "stepless" ratio changes, unlike conventional transmission systems that use sets of fixed gears. The CVT is an automatic transmission that uses two pulleys with a steel belt running between them. To continuously vary its gear ratios, the CVT simultaneously adjusts the diameter of the "drive pulley" that transmits torque from the engine and the "driven pulley" that transfers torque to the wheels. With stepless shifting of gear ratios, the CVT can avoid the shift-shock and deliver smooth driving, making it an exceptional transmission solution.The only disadvantage here is that there is a high chance of wear and tear.

  1. Torque Converters
  Torque converters were the first kind of automatics developed. The main use of the torque converters is to ‘multiply torque’ from the engine to provide a seamless driving experience.  Torque converter is a type of fluid coupling which transfers rotating power from a prime mover, like an internal combustion engine, to a rotating driven load. In a vehicle with an automatic transmission, the torque converter connects the power source to the load. It is usually located between the engine's flexplate and the transmission. The equivalent location in a manual transmission would be the mechanical clutch. But these kind of transmissions have complicated geometry, have more chances of wear and tear, and are not fuel efficient

LOVE AT FIRST ZEN - My first ever car

Hey there! Welcome to my first post. 1. Love at first Zen! There may be many vintage cars that people talk about. Ask me, being born in 2002 I don't know much. Because all that I'd seen when I was born in the early 2000's were Altos, 800's, Accent's etc That brings us to my first ever car. The Suzuki Zen.  The moment I saw it, it was love at first sight! (cant say drive because I'm still 17!) It looked stunning in violet and had lots going for it. A 1998 LX model. It's 'jelly bean' design looked so extraordinary for a hatchback. My neighbours who owned the car before me, modified the car to look like the VX spec by adding a bull bar, power windows and a set of fog lamps which was very cool that time If anybody ever knew this, Zen actually stands for Zero-engine-noise  It had a 900cc engine powered by 60 (yes 60!) Horsepower coupled with 78nm of torque Sounds less in today's world but hey, I'm not done talking yet....
