Hydrogen powered fuel cell cars: The Future ?
Hydrogen fuel cell cars, the successor of electric cars
We've always heard about electric vehicles and Teslas being the future of mobility.
Well, fuel cell cars are on their way to mass production once the resources are available and costs are lower. And could be the successor to electric cars or be placed as an alternative
Hyundai Nexo and Toyota Mirai are the first few cars on sale that possess such powertrains.
Wanna know how they work? You've come at the right place
Coming from the Hyundai Nexo, its fuel cell engine generates electricity.
mixing oxygen with compressed hydrogen to create a flow of electrons.
It’s intelligent, efficient, and only emits pure, clean water. I too was shocked by the fact that from carbon monoxide, we can have a car whose byproduct is water. There is also a battery pack to provide smooth acceleration for better driveability
So how do I charge/fill the tank?
This can be done from hydrogen fuel stations. As gases flow quickly, the time to fill up half the tank is just 5 mins to provide 590 km of range. Almost as quick as refueling a petrol car and way quicker than electric cars with their awfully slow charging times. And if you want to talk about range, 666kms on a single refuel is really great. Such cars have support for
And the by product of the engine is just pure and clean water. Cool, isn't it?
The car can also be used to serve as a mobile power plant to provide power to a camper. Your weekend trips in campers are now possible.
But yes there are disadvantages here. And it's the same problem faced by electric cars too.
Refueling infrastructure. It's obvious that in the same way if we have hydrogen refueling centers at the same place as petrol and electric charging points it should be possible. Also i'm not really sure how we’ll be able to execute making hydrogen stations available everywhere. Even hyundai has made the car available in California, USA only. They've not been able to do it there, so I'm not having any expectations for them to do it here too.
Servicing. As this technology is new, servicing might be costlier than usual.
The Nexo is powered by a 161hp engine, and on the good side it does work great as a city SUV. it looks futuristic, has a luxurious interior, great build quality and safety features. It can even park on its own, if you ask it too and is loaded with features. It won't be a true hyundai with the best in segment features of course.
So here guys is what i think about hydrogen cars. Do you think hydrogen cars can replace electric cars or be an alternative?
